Amazon, Telcos Will Battle For Cloud Customers

Cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) revenues grew 15% in 2012 to a total of $ 12.5 billion, according to Synergy Research, a Reno, Nev., market researcher in telecommunications, in the report, “Amazon Cloud IaaS and PaaS Investments Pay Off,” published Monday.

The figure reflects estimated revenues from cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services, not the total cloud market. The total market also includes software sold to enterprises for managing private clouds and services sold to consumers from the cloud.

Will VMware Challenge Amazon Head On?

VMware told Wall Street analysts Wednesday that it is launching an approach to hybrid cloud computing that will enable its customers to use their VMware-based data center environments in conjunction with infrastructure-as-a-service providers in the public cloud.

In VMware’s view, its virtualization management console will be the command post for both sets of workloads and will allow movement out to the cloud and back again. Before such a situation can become a reality, however, VMware must move further down the road to virtualized networks acting as an integral part of a software-defined data center.

Scary flaw makes your USB ports a major security risk

It’s the second Tuesday in March, which means that it’s also the third Patch Tuesday of 2013. Microsoft released seven new security bulletins today, with four rated as “critical,” but security experts are particularly concerned about a flaw rated as merely “important” that exposes your Windows PCs to major risk.

Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, notes in a blog post that the number of security bulletins is about par for the course for Microsoft. He adds, “In technical terms though we are seeing some interesting vulnerabilities that definitely rate higher-than-average.”
