Dell is in the process of buying back its shares to become a privately held companyonce again. Microsoft helped facilitate Dell’s $ 24.4 billion deal, with a $ 2 billion investment that makes the two tech giants partners of sorts. This is either the last gasp of desperation for PCs as we know it, or a sign that Dell and Microsoft still have innovative tricks up their proverbial sleeves.

VMware Vs. Microsoft: The Next Chapter


VMware’s fourth-quarter earnings, reported Jan. 28, set a record and came in ahead of analyst expectations. The next day, its stock, which had been trading at $ 99.10 just before the announcement, took a stunning hit, losing 20% of its value within a short time after the opening of trading.

Several analysts had predicted VMware’s fourth-quarter earnings would disappoint because the market for virtualization products was nearly saturated and Microsoft was moving in to steal the customer base.

Oracle to Acquire Acme for $1.7B


Oracle Corp. opened the week with a US$ 1.7 billion bang by announcing an agreement to acquire IP networking systems specialist Acme Packet Inc. for $ 29.25 per share, a 22 percent premium over Acme’s closing price Friday of $ 23.93.

The deal values Acme Packet at $ 2.1 billion, but Oracle will be shelling out about $ 1.7 billion once the value of Acme’s cash, short-term investments and other assets are taken into account.
