Data is the fuel that drives business, and the database is the engine that runs it all. But, just as most people would rather drive a hot new Ferrari than a rusty, dented 1972 Ford Pinto, users are more likely to put the database to use if it looks good.
The new FileMaker 12 promises to make it easier than ever to create sensational databases that look good across multiple platforms and devices. FileMaker–a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple—makes the FileMaker database software, and the Bento personal organizer.

April 8, 2012 at 1:16 pm Facebook recently rolled out the new Timeline layout for business pages. The launch of Timeline came with a small hiccup, though, as images have been randomly replaced for some users. What’s more concerning is the fact that the images that were inserted don’t actually belong to the owner of the Facebook page.
I know because it’s happened to me. Twice.

April 7, 2012 at 7:12 pm Since Citrix gave Cloudstack to the Apache Software Foundation, there has been a lot of blogging, tweeting, and arguing about whether cloud computing software vendors should simply let Amazon AWS drive cloud computing standards. It’s time for the stakeholders–enterprises, vendors, open source projects, and anyone else interested to start scoping, developing, and implementing standards that everyone can use.

April 7, 2012 at 1:19 pm As adoption of the IPv6 Internet protocol continues to gain traction, some network security monitoring businesses and industry analysts are starting to see a troubling phenomenon that they call ‘shadow networks’. On a shadow network, data flows through new IPv6-enabled connections and onto the existing IPv4 network, but the IPv4 security in place is unable to identify that IPv6 traffic. All sorts of security perils can arise from that and even though at this point they are only theoretical, security experts worry it may not be long before bad guys figure out a way of using these shadow networks for nefarious purposes

April 7, 2012 at 1:14 am Running rows and rows of servers, storage appliances and networking equipment makes the electric bill a data center receives at the end of each month a whopper. That’s why data-center operators are constantly working on ways to improve energy efficiency. A couple of tech companies in Silicon Valley have reported considerable progress in improving energy efficiency, and a national organization shows the average energy efficiency also improving, though some data-center operators are having more success than others.

April 6, 2012 at 7:14 pm As part of the Army’s Area Processing Centers Army Private Cloud (APC2) initiative, HP and other companies will be providing the Army with “mobile data center” services, including so-called containerized data centers that come in shipping containers, the winners of the $ 249.8 million contract vehicle announced this week.
The Army awarded nine APC2 contracts to seven companies in early January, but several of those companies this week began to disclose more details about the work they’d be performing under the contracts. The awardees included IBM, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, MicroTech, Lockheed Martin, and Criterion Systems.

April 6, 2012 at 7:16 am On the whole, server virtualization has been a blessing due to physical machine to logical machine consolidation that leads to better system and CPU utilization and attendant improved IT cost economics. But servers are only part of broader interlocked “systems” of hardware components (including networks and storage) and software (including operating systems and applications) that must work in harmony together. And any change in one component (in this case, servers) may cause complications or problems (such as performance and capacity utilization) with another component (in this case, storage). This is yet another instance of the law of unintended consequences. However, Virsto’s chosen role is to repeal that instance of the law through the use of its storage hypervisor.

April 6, 2012 at 1:15 am A bit more than a year ago the folks behind the LTO tape format standards, primarily IBM, with some contributions from HP and Quantum, added the Linear Tape File System to LTO’s feature list. While some niche markets, primarily the media and entertainment business, have adopted LTFS, it won’t live up to it’s promise without support from archiving and eDiscovery vendors.
