There is a rumor swirling that Microsoft is hard at work developing a native iOS app version of its Microsoft Office productivity software to run on the iPad. If it turns out to be true, it could be awesome, but there are also some ways that Microsoft could really screw it up.
Box Offers Free Cloud Storage for LG Android Devices
Box is making headlines in cloud-based storage once again. It has enhanced the features of the Box for Android app, and it is teaming up with LG to provide 50GB of free cloud-based storage for all LG Android mobile devices.
Users who sign up for a Box account through an LG Android mobile device between today and March 21, 2012 will receive 50GB of cloud-based storage for the lifetime of the account. This is similar to the free 50GB account promotion that Box ran in October for iOS devices, and makes Box a virtual no-brainer for storing and working with data from mobile devices.

The Cloud, Day 17: Cloud Entertainment Comes with Strings Attached

30 Days With the Cloud: Day 17
The cloud is emerging as a platform for entertainment beyond just streaming music. The problem right now is that many of the content providers have the model backwards and insist on linking cloud-based viewing with old school cable service subscriptions. For today’s installment of 30 Days With the Cloud, I am taking a closer look at watching movies and TV shows from the cloud.

Is RIM Throwing in the Towel on the PlayBook?
RIM is reportedly taking a $ 485 million charge to write off the value of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet inventory. With the device slashed to a fraction of its original price and still not moving, RIM may soon follow in HP’s footsteps and kill the PlayBook entirely.
I don’t really know how all that fancy business accounting magic works, but using simple math based on the full $ 500 retail price of the base 16GB PlayBook, it seems like RIM is sitting on–and writing off 970,000 or so units. That’s a lot of unsold tablets.

The 10Gig Ethernet Cable Conundrum
As we enter the 10Gbps Ethernet era in the datacenter, we’re facing some difficulties regarding cables and optics. While I’m happy all the vendors have settled on SFP+, eliminating the nightmare of figuring out if a given device uses XFP, Xenpack or X2 optics, to make 10gig affordable we’re going to have to use copper cables for the 10M or shorter connections within the data center. I just wish that was as easy as grabbing a cable that meets industry standard specs and plugging it in.

IE9 Continues to Climb on Windows 7
A new month means new Web browser statistics, the last of 2011. As we close out the year, Internet Explorer as a whole is down for the year, but the good news for Microsoft is that Internet Explorer 9 continues to gain ground on Windows 7, which is essentially the only OS the browser works with anyway.
