Economic Meltdown Impacts IT Plans

The economy has seen better days. Many IT departments started 2011 with cautious optimism and grand plans to modernize and expand, but amid the turmoil of the past month or so those plans have been whittled away.

Uncertainty. Even before the current economic crises caused by the political extortion over the debt ceiling, and the subsequent historic downgrading of the credit rating of the United States, the economy was on a shaky recovery at best. In a survey of 563 IT professionals conducted by nCircle in March, 48 percent of respondents claimed the economic downturn had impacted security initiatives in their organization–up 11 percent from 2010.

Raining On Cloud Bursting’s Parade

Cloud bursting–the ability to dynamically move processing temporarily to a cloud provider in response to some excess demand–sounds like such a great idea. If successful, you can continue to handle the excess burst without having to acquire new hardware, software, and licenses and, equally important, you can do it right now. But before you start popping champagne corks and taking a celebratory lap, you will likely have some significant hurdles to get over.

21st Century Automation And What It Means

For the first time in history, we have an economic recovery without corresponding rehiring because corporate automation and other factors are allowing companies to function leaner. It’s a frightening change for some, but it also opens opportunities for IT professionals who are gifted in analytics, workflow re-engineering, vendor management and integration. One case in point is warehousing, and what has happened there to allow companies to respond rapidly to market conditions while keeping costs down with IT.

Google+, Day 3: Filling In the Circles

On Day 2 of 30 Days With Google+ I walked through the setting up a Google+ profile once you get an invitation to join the limited Field Trial. Having done that, though, it is now time to start adding some contacts to make it a social network instead of just a profile page. To add contacts in Google+, I first have to grasp the Circles concept.

SDOs ‘Battling’ For Cloud Supremacy?

It seems there is no shortage of standards and requirements principals for cloud computing, with the latest to join the fray being the Open Cloud Principles document just published by the Open Cloud Initiative at OSCON 2011. In early June 280 companies joined together as the Open Data Center Alliance and released a set of proposed standards for cloud providers. That was a day after the members of the Cloud Standards Customer Council announced a project to create a “Practical Guide to Cloud Computing.”
