Enterasys Announces IPv6 Support For IPS

Enterasys Networks’ intrusion prevention system now supports IPv6, meeting the federal procurement mandate, which went into effect this year, and future-proofing business customers who will eventually adopt the expanded network addressing protocol. “The federal government mandates Ipv6 support; they’re not using it, but everything they buy has to have it,” said Charles Kolodgy, IDC research VP for secure products. “You need that check box if you want to sell to the government, especially DoD.”

The Win-Win-Win Scenario Of A Compellent And Dell Merger

On December 9th, Compellent and Dell announced that they “are engaged in advanced discussions regarding a possible business combination involving the two companies.” I blogged about Compellent here on October 8th and one day before the joint Compellent – Dell announcement. Some voices in the industry, not associated with Network Computing, have raised thinly veiled arguments that question the sense, and value, of an acquisition of Compellent by Dell. In my opinion, Compellent will be a strong addition to both the Dell Virtual Information System (VIS) architecture and the Data Center Solutions (DCS) capabilities. Should it come to fruition, this potential acquisition is a win-win-win for customers, Compellent, and Dell.

Dell And Compellent Sitting In a Tree

Dell and Compellent are engaged in exclusive negotiations for Dell to acquire Compellent at $ 27.50 a share, or $ 876 million. Because the storage business has seen bidding wars for Data Domain and 3Par over the past few years, and Compellent has been not-so-quietly building a state-of-the-art modular array, my friends down on Wall Street have bid Compellent’s stock up to $ 33 a share and are likely to be disappointed. Because I’m a geek, not a trader, I’m more concerned about how this will play out for Dell and Compellent customers.

IBM Systems And Tecnology Group Growth Strategies

At its recent industry analyst event in Rye Brook, N.Y., IBM’s Systems and Technology Group (STG) unveiled its five-year growth strategies for 2011 through 2015. As the guardian of the hardware and software that exploits that hardware to maximum benefit, STG is one of the recognized foundations of IBM, with a wide range of servers (including x86, Unix and mainframe systems) and storage products, as well as the IBM Research labs that support those efforts. Understanding what IBM STG is doing is important to understanding not only what the company is doing now and plans to do in the near future, but also to understanding what IBM thinks are the dynamics that will be driving the IT industry in years to come.

HP’s E-Series ZL Ethernet Modules Sip Power

Hewlett-Packard’s new E-Series ZL v2 modules for the HP 8200 and 5400 switch chassis, which are targeted at the campus LAN, sport increased port density and support for the IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standard. This standard defines how an Ethernet port can switch to a sleep mode when not being used, which leads to less energy consumption. HP is also changing its licensing models with the 8200 and 5400, doing away with the premium license for advanced features such as advanced routing.

NetApp Takes On EMC With Future Ready Infrastructure

Today NetApp announced new high-end and mid-range storage systems, support for 2.5 inch disk drives and Solid State Disks (SSD), Data ONTAP 8.0.1, unified connectivity for FCoE, CIFS, NFS, and iSCSI, along with the OnCommand Management Suite, and FlexPod for VMware which is a pre-sized and validated data center infrastructure solution. NetApp is clearly targeting the burgeoning Virtual Machine opportunity and is building the path to a future-ready infrastructure. In my opinion, today’s announcement by NetApp represents the big bet that the company can provide storage, software, and connectivity technology that provides the infrastructure foundation for shared storage in both virtual and physical server environments.

IBM Offers IT Service Desk Fix

IBM estimates that only 5 percent of service and support issues are resolved by self service, which makes the $ 1.2 billion IT service desk market (Gartner “Magic Quadrant for the IT Service Desk,” Nov. 4, 2010) ripe for automation and integration products such as Big Blue’s new cloud-based Tivoli Live -service manager. According to Gartner’s IT Key Metrics Data, the IT service desk accounts for about 4 percent of the total IT budget, and since 86 percent of the cost of an IT service desk is staffing-related, that means about 3.9 percent of the total IT budget is spent on IT service desk staff.

Dell’s Compellent Deal Should Hurt, Not Kill, EMC Relationship

Dell’s proposed acquisition of Compellent Technologies should mean that the EMC Clariion relationship, which took a big hit with Dell’s acquisition of EqualLogic and suffered another body blow when Dell lost out to Hewlett-Packard in the 3Par bidding war, is pretty much over. Dell is seeking to acquire all outstanding common stock of Compellent for $ 27.50 per share, a deal valued at more than $ 800 million.
