Survey Says Companies Struggle With Cloud In Disaster Recovery

An annual survey from Symantec Corp. on disaster recovery shows that trends such as virtualization and the cloud continue to have an impact on organizations’ disaster recovery plans. In fact, 84 percent of survey respondents say that virtualization led them to reevaluate their disaster recovery plans in 2010, compared with 64 percent in 2009. Technologies such as virtualization and the cloud make disaster recovery more complex. Respondents cited several factors, most notably a lack of tools or having to use multiple tools, as challenges they had encountered while protecting mission-critical applications in virtual and physical environments.

IBM Applies Evolutionary Approach To Revolutionary Chip

IIBM has said that it will deliver an exascale chip within the next five years. The company made the annoucement less than two weeks after the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory announced the creation of the Exascale Technology and Computing Institute (ETCi). RAID: I’m Not Dead Yet

The other day a message showed up in my inbox with the subject “Is RAID Dead?” While I understand, and agree, that expectations and advances in technology have passed simple RAID 5 by, I’m getting tired of the “XYZ Technology is dead” meme. At various times we’ve been told tape, the PC, and e-mail were all dead. If calling RAID dead is an overstatement, what is the state of RAID?

Virtualization Drives Server Prices Up

Excluding Oracle, whose server business (essentially Sun) continues to hemorrhage, the third quarter saw server shipments and average selling price of servers continue to soar across the board. The latest numbers from Gartner painted a rosy picture for server vendors, with global shipments up 14.2 percent year-over-year, while revenues were up 15.3 percent. IDC was a shade more Grinch-like, reporting a 13.2 percent revenue increase, to $ 11.8 billion, on a 13.1 percent increase in shipments.

Data Center Convergence: Fact or Fiction?

Recently, IT departments have had trouble keeping pace with growth in their data centers. In many cases, each time that a new application was built, they had to deploy a new server, storage system, and network switch. With IT becoming a key business enabler and the number of applications swelling, they ended up with a plethora of devices.

How to capture text, backup configuration (Cisco,Juniper or anything)with Putty

I dont think we need an introduction to the most widely used Remote console utility, PUTTY. Putty support SSH, Telnet, RLogin & RAW connections.

If you telnet or SSH to your Cisco IOS routers or switches or Juniper Firewalls and ofcourse anything that support CLI and SSH or Telnet then one of the things you would prefer to do is to take a backup of the config (Running or Startup) or even capture session text including logs tech information etc. We discussed here about using Hypereterminal to capture text and hence backup and restore config on Cisco IOS Routers and Switches.

Allow user view Running/Startup-Config (red-only) in Cisco IOS

If you want to allow a low-priviledged user on a Cisco router or a Switch to view the Startup Config then this can be done in Routers and Switches running Cisco IOS.

This infact is a simple 2 step procedure as follows:

Set Privileges to view Startup Config

From the Global configuration mode, set the permissions for the privilege level 3. This should allow the users set with privilege level 3 to view the startup config.
