Quantum Corp. has chosen to announce its Scalar Linear Tape File System (LTFS) appliance at this week’s National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. The Scalar LTFS appliance uses a self-describing file system and is intended to act as a gateway between a tape library supporting the Linear Tape Open (LTO) standard and network-attached storage (NAS), and provide the benefits of LTFS to library users as well as to users of standalone LTO drives.

Enterprise Flash Cache-ing Up To HDDs
Although the well-documented shortage of hard disk drives led many industry watchers to believe there would be a significant move to solid-state drives (SSDs) at the end of last year, that actually hasn’t been the case because many OEMs ordered excess inventory of SSDs. SSDs’ higher cost compared to HDDs also makes lumping the two in the same category unfair.

How RIM can Save the BlackBerry Brand in Three Easy Steps
BlackBerry is an iconic brand. Unfortunately on its current trajectory BlackBerry is going to be an extinct brand in the not too distant future. RIM has a solid foundation, and it can still be salvaged, but RIM needs to stop throwing stuff at the wall just to see what sticks.
A Wall Street Journal report states that RIM is considering “all opportunities” to turn things around and steady its plummeting market share. Instead of pursuing every possibility simultaneously, RIM should scale back and follow this simple three step process to get things back on track:

Windows 8: Which Version Should You Choose?
Microsoft revealed in a blog post what the different versions of Windows 8 will be when the OS officially launches. The news from Microsoft clears some things up, but it also raises some additional questions and may still leave some wondering which version of Windows 8 is the “right” one.
One thing is clear, the next version of Windows will be called Windows 8. That is unless it’s running on ARM hardware, in which case it’s Windows RT.

Mobile Data Meets Infrastructure — The Time Has Come
The usual scenarios discussed for mobile data tend to involve either single-user connectivity or mobile hotspots, and rarely get into the notion of using mobile links for “important” business connections. But that is changing, as more manufacturers work the value afforded by fast-enough carrier-provided network connections into their feature sets, and more customers buy in. Whether used in a primary service role, or more commonly as wireless failover, 3G and 4G data links provide some interesting options to those who build networks.

VMware Cloud Foundry Plays Disruptive Role
VMware celebrated the first anniversary of its Cloud Foundry development platform Wednesday, and during the festivities on Hillview Ave. in Palo Alto, which included a cake with a single candle, all I could think of, was: “Why is VMware doing this?”
Why is it a big deal that Cloud Foundry is one year old? Cloud Foundry has experienced 75,000 downloads since it became available as open source code. So what? Those 75,000 downloads would constitute a slow day for MySQL or the Apache Web Server.

Why BlackBerry Mobile Fusion Is the Future of RIM
RIM is most known for its iconic BlackBerry smartphones, but one of the driving forces behind the success of RIM—and one of the reasons it’s still as pervasive as it is today—is the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) infrastructure. Now, RIM has introduced BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, which extends BES to manage Android and iOS devices as well. While marketed as a value-add for BlackBerry customers, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion may very well be the core product for RIM moving forward.
