LiveOffice is partnering with Microsoft to streamline the migration process for some of Microsoft’s Exchange Hosted Archive users to LiveOffice’s cloud archiving product. This is a followup to Microsoft’s launch of Office 365, which is when Microsoft began transitioning existing EHA users to Exchange Online Archiving. However, some user’s needs aren’t met by either Exchange Online Archiving or the built-in archiving features of Office 365, such as users who want to archive other content types, who have stricter regulatory requirements, or who cannot host Exchange Online Archiving.

HTC Dealt a Setback in Apple Patent War
The ITC has dismissed a patent infringement claim from S3 Graphics against Apple. The ruling is bad news for HTC, which is engaged in its own patent battles with Apple, and is in the midst of acquiring S3 Graphics–ostensibly to shore up its patent arsenal.
A blog post from Florian Mueller, a patent and intellectual property analyst, explains that the official notice does not provide any details specifying why the ITC overruled the preliminary decision of the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). The official notice from the ITC simply states that no violation has been shown, and officially terminates the investigation.

The FCC held a hearing this week to investigate the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile by wireless rival AT&T. The end result is that the deal does not have the support of the FCC.
A senior official at the FCC–who was not authorized to comment publicly—stated, “The record clearly shows that–in no uncertain terms–this merger would result in a massive loss of US jobs and investment.”

The Tape Format Rot Fear Factor
As I speak with users at the backup seminars I teach around the country, I often hear them say that they avoid using tape for long-term data retention, expressing their concern with something like, “They come out with a new format every few years, and then you can’t read your tapes.” While it is technically true that, eventually you’ll have to migrate data from old tapes to new media, and you should probably be able to go longer between migrations with tape than with disk archives.

Smartphone Bloatware Is Bad For Everyone
It was time to switch out my beloved Motorola Droid for something new. I did my research, placed my order, and was delighted after getting home from work one day to find that Fed Ex had done their thing. As I dug in on learning and configuring my new device, I found myself experiencing another sentiment shared by fellow smartphoners- the angst of discovering that your device is loaded with garbage programs that you can’t remove. Ah yes, bloatware.

Fat Apps Are Where It’s At
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is seeing something of a revival lately due to the increased penetration of mobile tablets. Why lug a laptop around that has a short battery life and takes forever to load when you can use a lighter, more responsive tablet? If you can get your desktop on your tablet, all the better, right? No. Not at all. More over, server based desktop applications, such as those served from the likes of Citrix XenApp and VMware ThinApp, which does application streaming or just the UI components, are doomed. We need need fat apps.
