Will You Check Your Work Email on Thanksgiving?

Tis the season for family gatherings, holiday cheer…and work? A survey from Xobni finds that nearly 70 percent of Americans will make some time between watching the Detroit Lions and eating turkey this Thursday to check their work email.

I wrote a similar story this time last year citing the 2010 Xobni survey results. The 2011 survey finds that checking work email while on break for the holidays is trending up in general. The number reporting that they will check email has risen from 60 to 68 percent, with more than one in four stating that they will be checking work email multiple times throughout the day.

Aerohive’s $99 Branch Office Offering Is Not A Black Friday Sale

For the price of an external hard drive or a printer, you can get a complete branch office network from Aerohive Networks. We’re talking wired and wireless networking here. Granted, the branch that can be serviced for under a hundred bucks is a small one, but the story is still quite interesting as part of a larger trend. Cloud-managed networking continues to get less expensive and more feature rich, and the used-to-be-wireless-only guys are laying claim to more of the wired network in cool new ways.

IPv6 Momentum Takes Huge Swing

A new Infoblox-sponsored IPv6 Census conducted by the Measurement Factory reports a 1,900% increase in the percentage of zones under .com, .net and .org that support IPv6. Only 1.27% of the zones surveyed in 2010 supported the successor to Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4), compared to today’s 25.4%.

Fewer Reboots in Windows 8 Is a Patching Shell Game

Microsoft revealed in a post on the Building Windows 8 blog that the next-generation Windows OS will require fewer reboots for Windows patches and updates. To anyone who has lost hours of work thanks to an unexpected automatic reboot, that probably sounds awesome. But, there is a reason the system reboots, and the solution proposed by Microsoft doesn’t solve the issue.

The Cloud, Day 9: Hey! Where’d My Cloud Go?

30 Days With the Cloud: Day 9

Most talk about the cloud is focused on the magic ability to access tools, services, and data from virtually anywhere because the cloud is everywhere…except when it’s not. I got to experience that fun first hand today, and it highlights a serious drawback to relying on the cloud.
