While some may debate the business purpose or value of social networking, it is a staple of my work day. I use social networks to stay on top of trends and breaking news, and I use social networks to share with others when I find interesting news or write posts of my own. Since I rely on social networks, one of the litmus tests for this 30 Days With the iPad project is to ensure the Apple tablet can meet my social networking needs.

Microsoft Adds Co-Authoring Feature to Word Web App

When Office 365 rolled out just a couple weeks ago, one of most obvious ways it was lacking in comparison to the rival Google Docs apps was that there was no way to collaborate in real-time on Word documents using the Word Web App. Well, as of today that is no longer an issue–Microsoft has added a co-authoring capability to the Word Web App.

Dropbox Redux: They Don’t Really Own Your Stuff

I was until recently an enthusiastic Dropbox user. I’ve therefore been sitting on the sidelines and watching with amazement as a kerfuffle of unusual size has been brewing amongst Dropbox users. Now blog posts with titles like “Dropbox Updates Terms Of Service – Now Owns All Your Stuff” and “All your files are belong to them” are driving more users away from the still popular service.

A company called Bluebeam Software has introduced Studio Server, a server-based collaboration platform for editing text, images, CAD drawings, blueprints and other content in the portable document format (PDF) but still provide the security of keeping the project behind the firewall.

Four Reasons Businesses Should Start Using Facebook Video Chat

Facebook held a media event Wednesday morning to unveil ‘something awesome’. That something awesome is that Facebook is adding a group chat feature, and the ability–in partnership with Skype–to conduct video calls from within Facebook.

Awesome is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I would have been much more impressed if the ‘something awesome’ was the rumored Facebook iPad app. Awesome is also relative. These features may be awesome for Facebook users compared with not having them, but compared with rival platforms the Facebook features just play catch up, and don’t even quite get there in some respects.
