Following industry expectations, Veeam Software is announcing its intention to have its family of virtualization backup and replication software support Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor by the fourth quarter of this year. Up until now, the company’s product line has supported only the VMware virtualization system. The company expects that both hypervisors will be supported in a single download and installation.

HP Makes IT Support More Flexible With New Portal And Mobile Device Access
HP has added features to its HP Support Center for enterprise IT customers through an online portal which includes answers to questions, an online community of close to a million IT professionals and a mobile application so that customers can get answers whenever and wherever they are. The enhancements to the HP Support Center, announced Tuesday, are intended to address customer demands for “HP Always-on Support” for an always running IT infrastructure.

Zenprise Retools For Security
Ah, the dreaded consumerization of IT. Chances are you’re as guilty as the rest of us when it comes to getting a little too familiar with the company-issued smartphone. Sure, you’ve rationalized away putting skee ball on the iPhone as a harmless distraction, and your kids like to play Angry Birds on “your” device when they get bored. You’ve simply gotten used to seeing the business-oriented icons next to the ones that launch the fun stuff, and it’s all very comfortable to have the work apps mixed with the home apps on “your” smartphone. Sound familiar? The problem is that the device is still a company computing platform, regardless of its mobility and portability. But abusing it just got quite a bit more difficult with Zenprise’s latest Mobile Manager enhancements and new Mobile Gateway application.

Fujitsu America Unveils Free Cloud Services
As one of the biggest IT vendors you’ve never heard of, at least as far as the U.S. market goes, Fujitsu America understands a business-as-usual approach to launching its cloud platform might not be the best approach. So the world’s third largest IT services provider, and fifth largest server and PC vendor, is debuting the North American version of its two-year-old Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform of the Fujitsu Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offering, beginning May 31 and ending on August 31.

Five Reasons Microsoft Can Still Win the Tablet War
Microsoft has let it be known that the next version of Windows will run on ARM-architecture, and it has demonstrated early builds of Windows 8–or whatever Microsoft ultimately calls the next OS–on a tablet at both CES 2011, and MIX ’11. While Microsoft did a quick 180 on comments from Steve Ballmer confirming a 2012 launch of Windows 8, we know it’s coming sometime, and when it does it may quickly dominate the tablet market.

Quest And StorSimple Collaborate On Cloud-Based Backup
In an attempt to provide users of Quest Software Inc.’s vRanger software for virtualized systems the ability to back up data to the cloud, the company has announced a partnership with StorSimple, which makes the StorSimple Hybrid Cloud Storage Appliance. The combination of the two products will give vRanger users the ability to back up VMware virtual machines to disk with automated cloud archiving and storage tiering, as well as virtual machine-level restores from the cloud.

Survey Shows Public Sector Support For Hybrid Clouds, Little For Public Clouds
A survey of public sector IT professionals in the federal government, that was released on Monday, reveals that only 6.9 percent of those surveyed think that accessing IT resources from a public cloud service is a viable strategy, while a vast majority of 68 percent support a private or hybrid cloud approach. The survey by Quest Software Public Sector, a division of Quest Software, also found that there’s still confusion among users about the differences between virtualization and cloud computing. And, notably, only one out of 10 respondents has devised an “exit strategy” to withdraw from cloud computing or transfer to another cloud service provider, which makes for a significant gap in cloud planning.

I, like most of you, spend much of my time managing ever growing piles of data, so I was intrigued when an email with the subject “Five ways to manage data growth” arrived in my inbox, along with the usual press releases and spam. I was appalled when I saw that the first
suggestion was to impose strict quotas on user mailboxes and home directories.
