Citrix Creates ‘Project Olympus’ To Build Cloud IaaS Solution On Open Source

Citrix is launching “Project Olympus,’ an initiative to help enterprises build a cloud computing infrastructure they can operate privately, behind their own firewall, or export to run in a service provider’s public cloud. It is one of a number of announcements Citrix, known for delivering a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution to enterprises, made at the Citrix Synergy 2011 conference this week in San Francisco.

IO Turbine Solves VMware I/O Bottlenecks

New start-up IO Turbine, Inc. is taking the wraps off of its inaugural offering, software that addresses I/O bottleneck problems in VMware environments. By installing Accelio on a VMware server, users avoid the hardware caching constraints found on SAN, NAS or caching appliances that are downstream from the host and have no visibility into the source of the data that they are caching, says the company.

Jericho Trumpets At Identity’s Walls

Founded almost a decade ago by a group of international chief information security officers (CISOs) grappling with the seemingly diametrically opposed demands for both a more collaborative yet secure IT environment, the Open Group Jericho Forum has unveiled a set of identity commandments focusing on the fundamental design issues surrounding identity management and the access to systems, services and data. The forum, which focuses on defining and promoting solutions surrounding the issue of de-perimeterization and secure collaboration within cloud computing enterprise environments, has published the Identity, Entitlement and Access Management (IdEA) Commandments, a set of 14 open and interoperable principles that IT professionals can use to build a user-centric security framework within their organizations.

Dell Introduces New Thin Client Desktops, Virtual Lab 2.0 For Academia

Dell has broadened its line of OptiPlex thin client desktop computers for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments and introduced Dell Virtual Lab 2.0 for managing VDI environments in college and university computer labs, in order to deliver in-demand academic applications. The introductions, made Wednesday, also include an OptiPlex 390 business desktop computer.
New are the OptiPlex FX130 and OptiPlex FX170 thin clients, which join the OptiPlex FX100 and FX160 that are already shipping.

Quest And StorSimple Collaborate On Cloud-Based Backup

In an attempt to provide users of Quest Software Inc.’s vRanger software for virtualized systems the ability to back up data to the cloud, the company has announced a partnership with StorSimple, which makes the StorSimple Hybrid Cloud Storage Appliance. The combination of the two products will give vRanger users the ability to back up VMware virtual machines to disk with automated cloud archiving and storage tiering, as well as virtual machine-level restores from the cloud.

Fujitsu America Unveils Free Cloud Services

As one of the biggest IT vendors you’ve never heard of, at least as far as the U.S. market goes, Fujitsu America understands a business-as-usual approach to launching its cloud platform might not be the best approach. So the world’s third largest IT services provider, and fifth largest server and PC vendor, is debuting the North American version of its two-year-old Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform of the Fujitsu Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offering, beginning May 31 and ending on August 31.

HP Makes IT Support More Flexible With New Portal And Mobile Device Access

HP has added features to its HP Support Center for enterprise IT customers through an online portal which includes answers to questions, an online community of close to a million IT professionals and a mobile application so that customers can get answers whenever and wherever they are. The enhancements to the HP Support Center, announced Tuesday, are intended to address customer demands for “HP Always-on Support” for an always running IT infrastructure.
