Survey Shows Public Sector Support For Hybrid Clouds, Little For Public Clouds

A survey of public sector IT professionals in the federal government, that was released on Monday, reveals that only 6.9 percent of those surveyed think that accessing IT resources from a public cloud service is a viable strategy, while a vast majority of 68 percent support a private or hybrid cloud approach. The survey by Quest Software Public Sector, a division of Quest Software, also found that there’s still confusion among users about the differences between virtualization and cloud computing. And, notably, only one out of 10 respondents has devised an “exit strategy” to withdraw from cloud computing or transfer to another cloud service provider, which makes for a significant gap in cloud planning.

The device also has half the power and cooling requirements of previous models, and now offers an encryption option, though the company is not formally announcing it at this time.

Bringing Customer Experience And Business Channel Development Together With IT

As one of the largest hospitality companies in the world, Marriott has over 3,500 lodging properties in the U.S. and 69 other countries and territories, and a daily workload of over 750,000 new reservations. Transaction throughput must be rapid, unfailing and 24/7. If problems arise, failover must be swift and absolute. Simultaneously, business intelligence systems must be able to “right fit” pricing and accommodations for customers during transactions–and the systems must have the ability to extend the “reach” of Marriott’s reservation community from the company-hosted Website and systems to the Websites and systems of worldwide channel partners that sell Marriott reservations along with other services.

New E-Discovery Products Target Backup, SharePoint

Two new e-discovery products are coming to market to help IT tackle significant pain points: finding relevant information in data backups and SharePoint. At EMC World earlier this month, Index Engines announced that its collection engine can work with Data Domain, the widely-deployed deduplication and backup appliance from EMC. And Sherpa Software announced a new version of its Discovery Attender software that can find and collect files from Microsoft’s SharePoint platform. E-discovery is the process in which organizations involved in litigation find and collect data–documents, e-mail, and other electronic files–that may be relevant to the case.

Day 21: Chrome Extensions for Google Docs

30 Days With…Google Docs: Day 21

There are other benefits to using a Web-based productivity platform aside from the ability to collaborate online in real-time. For today’s 30 Days With…Google Docs post, we’ll explore another one of those benefits–the ability to extend functionality with browser add-ons.

Actually, let me start out with the caveat rather than tossing it in at the end–Microsoft Office has thousands of add-ins as well, so I guess that being Web-based really has little to do with whether or not new features and capabilities can be added in.

Let’s be honest. It was only a matter of time before Verizon followed AT&T’s lead and dropped unlimited data plans in favor of a tiered structure. It’s not all bad news, though. There is also some evidence that Verizon may soon offer shared data plans.
