My PCWorld peer Katherine Noyes recently graced the Web with a trademark post bashing Microsoft and whining about the lack of Linux love in the world. Noyes was incredulous that the NSA (National Security Agency) would urge users to move to Windows Vista while ignoring the Linux OS completely.
Day 13: Google Docs on the iPhone–Don’t Try This at Home
30 Days With…Google Docs: Day 13
[Author's Notes: A reader (JeremyWhalenwrum) pointed out that I missed the obvious, and that when you open a Google Docs document on the iPhone there is an Edit button at the upper right which lets you work with the file rather than just viewing it. I have updated this article to reflect that information.]

Interop’s Best Of The Best, Network Concerns
Interop, the IT industry’s biggest networking event, closed out its 25th annual outing by selecting the best of the best of products to allocate, secure, manage and improve the performance of the increasingly extended IT environment. A total of 135 entries qualified for the Best of Interop, an event produced by UBM TechWeb, the publisher of Network Computing. Additionally, according to two surveys at Interop, there are major concerns about cloud management and the flood of consumer devices invading the corporate network.

Building A Sustainable Cloud And More Predictions
I thought that the cloud was supposed to be about the aggregation of thousands of low-cost servers and disk drives, integrated together with a web services layer and a robust object store, all accessed as a pay as you go service. Wasn’t that how cloud service providers were supposed to make money, by using commodity components with their own “secret sauce” software on top? High cost legacy infrastructure products are not congruent with building a long-term sustainable cloud.

The annual conference featured more than 500 sessions, 100 labs and 100 exhibitors, and, if EMC made its big hardware refresh in January with 41 new products, there were more than enough announcements made this week.

Study Shows Companies Struggle To Calculate Cloud ROI
A survey released Monday shows that while more and more businesses are embracing cloud computing, they are having a difficult time determining what the return on investment (ROI) in a cloud project actually is. The study by a vendor-neutral organization called The Open Group also finds that most of those surveyed have no idea how cloud computing may impact their business processes.

Hadoop And Enterprise Storage?
Both NetApp and EMC have announced that they’re turning the turrets of their marketing battleships toward the Apache Hadoop marketplace that provides the back end to many Web 2.0 implementations. While I understand how Hadoop is attractive to these storage vendors–after all, a typical Hadoop cluster will have hundreds of gigabytes of data–I’m not sure I buy that Hadoop users need enterprise-class storage.
