May 11, 2011 at 7:59 pm It was just a matter of time. Cisco is often fashionably late to the party, but does know how to impress once it gets there. While smaller players like Meraki and Aerohive have enjoyed calling the wireless cloud space their own until now, Cisco branch office customers have been without viable cloud options for wireless. Given the IT talent constraints typically found in the branch model, combined with the complexity of WLAN done right, Cisco’s new Flex 7500 Series Cloud Controller will likely find a warm reception with customers who support distributed sites.

May 11, 2011 at 1:13 pm While exposition halls and vendor product announcements tend to get the most attention at conferences such as this week’s Interop in Las Vegas, the greatest value for many attendees is in education, in the form of the many workshops and technology tracks at the conference. One area of particular concern is that of security and risk management, and the Information Security and Risk Management Track at Interop provides many sessions that look at the trends in security and how IT can better protect sensitive data.

May 10, 2011 at 7:15 pm Organizations that outsource DNS management to specialized service providers experience half the downtime of those that manage DNS internally or rely on their ISPs, according to a study commissioned by Verisign. And, in another report, a Verisign survey showed that nearly two-thirds of the responding companies experienced distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, although more than 80% of them have some sort of DDoS protection, either on premises or through a service provider.

May 10, 2011 at 1:32 pm 30 Days WIth…Google Docs: Day 9
Today for the 30 Days With…Google Docs project I did some more exploring to see what Google Docs spreadsheets can do. While I don’t want them to get in the way of real functionality, I am admittedly a fan of bells and whistles. The ‘gee whiz’ factor is not lost on me, so I like to play around with features like the Gadgets that Google offers for the spreadsheets.

May 10, 2011 at 1:15 am While I’ve gotten used to the vulture-capital-driven creative destruction of companies in the tech business, even I sometimes get whiplash at how fast the VCs will eat their young. While cloud storage gateway vendor Cirtas is the latest example, NAS caching startup StorSpeed set a new land speed record coming out of stealth in October 2009 and blowing up just five months later. Now StorSpeed founder Greg Dahl, and a new executive team, have re-entered the market as CacheIQ.
