Day 2: So Far I’m Not Loving Google Docs

30 Days With…Google Docs: Day 2

I know. I have only been using Google Docs in place of Microsoft Office for two days, but so far it is a fairly frustrating experience. Suffice it to say, I’m not in love with Google Docs just yet.

30 Days With…Google Docs

You can do anything for 30 days, right? I mean, it’s only one month. How hard can it be? Well, I’m going to find out because today is the day I start my new project: “30 Days With…”

Each month I will embrace a new platform or technology–immersing myself in it and abandoning the tools and software I am familiar with. I will blog each day to share my experience, documenting the good and the bad (at least in my opinion). In addition, I will write up how-to’s and tips to help guide those who might follow my path someday.

The Future Of Networking On Display At Interop

Saying there is a lot of change in networking is like saying the sun is hot. Virtually every aspect of networking in the LAN and the WAN is developing new core protocols and technologies to meet growing demand. Networking isn’t just about bigger, faster, denser. The changes are about smarter networking that discovers optimal paths from point to point, ensuring zero packet loss. The changes are being driven by and are driving server, storage, and network virtualization. And the changes are about converged networking where data loss is unacceptable, and the emergence of flatter, faster networks that break the N-tier model. There is quite a round-up of networking sessions and demonstrations at Interop. Here is a taste.

Who Else Is Tracking Your Location?

Apple has been in hot water for the past week or so after it was discovered that iOS devices are tracking users as they move about, and storing location data. While having your iPhone or Android smartphone keep tabs on where you go raises privacy concerns for some, smartphones are by no means the only thing monitoring where you’ve been.

Lock Down Your Wi-Fi or the FBI Might Come Knocking

A New York man learned the hard way that leaving your wireless router open to the general public can have some very negative consequences, and that the authorities tend to act first and ask questions second.

You might think it’s no big deal to share your wireless network with your neighbors. But that altruism can bite you in the butt when a less scrupulous neighbor, or a random stranger connects to the wireless network and uses it for illegal activity. As far as the authorities are concerned, that illegal activity originates from your wireless router, so you are the primary suspect.

Distributed Core And East-West Routing–The Network Is Changing

Applications and data center infrastructures are changing, and this puts a strain on conventional IT architecture. A number of recent announcements have really put this in perspective, with key network infrastructure components devolving from a centralized “hub and spoke” model to one that might even deserve to be called “cloud.” Two key harbingers of this change are the shift from “North-South” to “all direction” network traffic and the decentralization of network device intelligence.

Open Source Cloud Stack Community Grows Quickly

A coalition of technology companies has come together in just nine months to deliver an open source software stack to enable cloud computing. At the OpenStack Conference and Design Summit going on this week in Santa Clara, Calif., participants in this open source community provided details on two interrelated open source projects, OpenStack Compute for developing a cloud-based server environment, and OpenStack Object Storage for cloud-based storage. Project organizers said open source software will allow businesses to use the same cloud platform in their own environment or with an external cloud service provider.

Force 10 Lays Out Standards-Based Next Generation Networking Vision

Force 10 is the latest networking vendor to announce a comprehensive vision for data center networking. Dubbed Open Cloud Networking, the idea is to use standard protocols to interconnect networking gear paired with their Open Automation capabilities, and offer integration and interoperation with network management and systems orchestration management servers. The company’s announcement includes additional automation features and new hardware to support the vision. Force 10 is not the first to the table, nor is its vision as grand as Cisco’s or Juniper’s, but the focus on standards support should resonate with companies that rely on multiple vendors.
