Cisco ‘Primes’ Its Borderless Networks Portfolio

Cisco is expanding its Borderless Networks portfolio–the architecture that incorporates routing, switching, mobility, security and wide-area network (WAN) optimization–with new security, management and video capabilities. Highlights include the Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), the centralized policy engine for the Cisco TrustSec solution that enforces a context-aware access security policy, distinguishes between organization-owned and personal user devices, and automates security with network-enforced access policies and encryption.

Criminals Cast Wide Net: Verizon Reports More Numerous But Smaller Breaches

Cyber criminals have apparently switched gears dramatically, eschewing big data breaches in favor of more low-risk attacks against poorly defended targets. The 2011 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report shows a precipitous drop in the number of records stolen–from 141 million in 2009 to 4 million in 2010, even as the caseload of breaches investigated increased more than six-fold.

The Race Is On for Internet Explorer 10

Have you downloaded Internet Explorer 9 yet? Microsoft hasn’t even begun to automatically push the latest version of the browser–released about a month ago–out to Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, and yet it unveiled the initial Platform Preview for Internet Explorer 10 at the MIX ’11 conference in Las Vegas this week.

Do Iron Mountain And Cirtas Exits Mean The Cloud Is Falling?

Last week, market research firm Gartner let it slip that Iron Mountain was shuttering its cloud storage service, and reliable sources are telling me that cloud storage gateway startup Cirtas has let its marketing and sales staffs go so the company can concentrate on improving the product. Is this a trend? Is the cloud falling? Will we be left choosing all our IT products from the five families … oops … remaining suppliers: IBM, HP, Dell, Oracle and Cisco?

PlayBook Launches Without BlackBerry Bridge Support from AT&T

As if the world needed more evidence that RIM rushed the PlayBook to market before it was ready, AT&T customers who jumped on the PlayBook bandwagon were frustrated to discover that the BlackBerry Bridge app is not available.

Other wireless customers were able to download the BlackBerry Bridge app and connect the PlayBook with a BlackBerry smartphone. AT&T customers who tried to get the BlackBerry Bridge app from the BlackBerry App World, though, were instead greeted with this message: “This application is not available on your device or for your carrier.”

Office 365 Isn’t Mobile Enough

One of the most compelling aspects of Office 365–aside from its overall value–is that you can access it from virtually anywhere. Because it is delivered from the cloud, the tools and services in Office 365 are not tied to a single PC or device, and data can be accessed from or synced among a desktop PC, the Web, and your smartphone–assuming you have a Windows Phone 7 smartphone.
