Microsoft has launched the public beta of the highly-anticipated Office 365. There is a lot to like about the cloud-based suite, but one of the most compelling features of the service might just be the price.
Intel and Micron Pack More Flash Memory in Less Space
IM Flash Technologies–the joint venture between Intel and Micron–has reached a new milestone for NAND flash memory with a smaller 20nm process. The smaller 20nm technology opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for smartphones, tablets, and other portable gadgets.
Intel and Micron have crafted an 8GB sample device using the 20nm process which it expects to mass produce in the second half of this year. The partners are also expected to produce a 16GB device, and can theoretically pack 128GB of flash storage onto a solid-state device the size of a postage stamp.

Comcast Screws Up Blazing Extreme 105 Service
Comcast recently introduced Extreme 105–its new 105mbps high-speed broadband service. It sounds awesome at face value, but Comcast managed to screw it up in not one, but two ways that make it a horrible deal.
Would you like to have blazing fast 105mbps broadband? Sure, why not? It would be awesome to have high-speed broadband that is 10 times faster than what I have now. But, the combination of an astronomical cost, and a data cap quickly spoil the dream.

Amplidata Builds “Unbreakable” Storage
While I stand by my position that we put too much of the responsibility for keeping our data safe for the long term on storage systems, as I wrote in Long Term Retention:It’s More Than Media, I also believe that you bet on different horses for different courses. Startup Amplidata’s new AmpliStor system has most of the features on my wish list for storing large data objects like medical images or rich media.
