Migrating To IPv6 Will Dominate Your IT Budget

The last two or three years has seen a bubble in budget planning for investing in virtualization, mainly around VMware and, to a much smaller extent, HyperV. HP and Cisco have been particularly aggressive in creating and exploiting this market with VMware. This has expanded into hardware and peripherals, especially storage and storage connectivity, to support virtualization capability.

U.S. Data Breach Costs Still Increasing, Ponemon Survey Reports

The cost of U.S. data breaches continues to rise, according to a Ponemon Institute survey, reaching an average cost of $ 7.2 million in 2010, up 7 percent from $ 6.8 million the previous year. The cost has increased every year since the first was released in 2006. That broke down to $ 214 per record, up from $ 204 the previous year, according to the sixth annual “U.S. Cost of a Data Breach” report, sponsored by Symantec.

Survey Shows Businesses Interested, But Still Conflicted, About The Cloud

A study released at the start of a cloud computing industry conference in Silicon Valley shows businesses embracing cloud computing, although cautiously. The study of companies of all sizes and industry types shows that companies are primarily attracted to cloud computing by the improved elasticity of IT resources, lower cost, and less time to deploy than building their own IT capacity. However, concern remains about the privacy of a company’s data in a cloud environment, control over cloud infrastructure and vendor lock-in.

RainStor Reigns In Soaring Data Costs

RainStor, which specializes in online data retention and retrieval, has tweaked its software for machine-generated data which, like the rest of the data universe, is expanding explosively. Using research from a recent Cisco study (Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, 2010-2015), the company says that data traffic nearly tripled in 2010, making it three years in a row. This communications data includes call detail records, mobile web-browsing, text messages and essentially all mobile transactions that need to be retained for months and sometimes years. RainStor says that unlike traditional relational database technologies, its software (4.5) is designed to handle tens of billions of records per day and queries across trillion-record archives at significantly lower storage costs.

When MLAG Is Good Enough

Do you need multi-path Ethernet in the data center using TRILL, Shortest Path Bridging (SPB), Cisco’s FabricPath or Brocade’s VCS in order to maximize network efficiency and reduce congestion? Probably not, unless you manage a very big data center with servers and access ports running into the tens of thousands. If you have less than 5,000 access ports in your data center, you can probably avoid routing Ethernet frames and use your vendor’s multi-chassis link aggregation (MLAG) product-set to interconnect the access in an active/active design. MLAG works

Vendor Consolidation Coming to Your Data Center?

The movement to combine server, storage, and network devices has the potential to cut costs for customers, which is a plus. However, as the dividing lines between different product categories fall, so might the vendors themselves. This change could benefit companies with the right equipment but create problems for those that have taken a best of breed approach with their data center product purchases.

IBM’s Smarter Planet Evolves From Vendor-Push To Market-Pull

IBM has been promoting its Smarter Planet concept–instrument the world’s systems, interconnect them and make them intelligent–for several years, but it has always seemed to be more vendor push than customer pull. However, this week the company is making several product announcements at the Pulse conference in Las Vegas, and while the news appears to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, the concept seems to be resonating with customers.
