IBM Acquires Emptoris Analytics

IBM said it has inked a deal to buy out Emptoris, a Burlington, Mass.-based developer of software that helps businesses improve the efficiency of their procurement and supply chain operations through the application on business analytics tools. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Apple Retools iAd, But Is it Enough?

Apple’s mobile ad platform, iAd, has been faltering, and losing market share. Apple is introducing some changes designed to make iAd more competitive, and regain some momentum, but it might not be enough.

Apple has a lucrative and valuable mobile audience with its strong position in the smartphone market with the iPhone, and virtual monopoly of tablets with the iPad. The dominance of iOS as a mobile platform gives Apple some leverage in mobile advertising.

Year In Review: Disk-y Business

The good news is that storage costs continue to drop, with Q3 disk capacity shipments up 30.7% year over year, while vendor revenues only increased 8.5%, meaning enterprises can buy more storage for less money. The bad news is that information volumes are growing at a minimum rate of 59% annually, so that even with the cost per byte dropping rapidly, falling prices can’t keep pace with increasing storage demands.

Microsoft Is Going All-In with iOS

Microsoft appears to be fully embracing iOS with a slew of new apps including SkyDrive, Xbox Live, OneNote for iPad, and even an iOS app version of Kinectimals, the popular Xbox 360 Kinect children’s’ game. It’s about time.

It has been a very busy week for Microsoft on the iOS front. Yesterday it rolled out a new and improved OneNote app for the iPhone, along with a dedicated iPad version. OneNote is one of the more popular Microsoft products, and it is a great tool for taking notes and organizing projects.

Hitachi Boosts Private Cloud Storage Gateway

Hitachi Data Systems announced on Wednesday that it has added new capabilities to its Hitachi Data Ingestor private cloud gateway that lets customers share data among themselves, migrate data between NAS devices and file servers to the Hitachi Content Platform, and restore previously deleted files.

Big Data A Big Pain In The Network

A new study reports that datacenter-to-datacenter connectivity is a ‘silent killer’ for big data deployments, according to Infineta Systems, a provider of WAN optimization systems for ‘big traffic’, with a vested interest in big data networking. The study, conducted by Infineta in collaboration with Internet Research Group (IRG), examines the intersection of big data and the enterprise WAN, and states that the WAN infrastructure is stretched to the breaking point.
