rPath is betting that the next big thing in cloud computing will be the OpenStack platform, and it is donating a ready-to-run appliance for push-button installation and upgrade to the open source cloud community. rPath has launched the OpenStack Compute Appliance, and is donating staff time and company technology for a test cloud based on equipment from Rackspace.

Videoconference system vendor Polycom has introduced a new room video telepresence system that comes with the Microsoft Lync unified communications platform built right in. Because the Polycom CX7000 Unified Collaboration System features tight integration with Lync, participants in video meetings will experience the same user interface (UI) they are familiar with when using Lync on their desktop computers, as well as the familiar Polycom UI.

The great thing about unlicensed spectrum is the ease with which wireless devices can be implemented. The bad part of unlicensed spectrum? That would be the ease with which wireless devices can be implemented. In the 2.4 GHz ISM band, a growing roster of wireless devices continues to harass and degrade the WLAN space to the dismay of those of us running big wireless environments.
